When you start planning a wedding, there is always a theme in mind. It doesn’t have to be an obvious and over-the-top theme, but there is always an idea in your mind on how the celebration should go.
Will your day be fun and whimsical? Formal and elegant? A giant house party with backyard BBQ? No matter what you decide as the theme for your wedding day, all the other elements should align with this concept. This includes your personal details, your guests attire, and even the speeches and toasts.
Mary Claire & Ian’s wedding at the Alfond Inn was a luxurious experience that brought a touch of elegance to the whole party. The music, ambiance, and mood was set from their Catholic ceremony at Knowles Memorial Chapel to the cocktail hour in the Conservatory at The Alfond Inn.
When guests entered the ballroom, they were blown away by the lighting, decor, and full atmosphere of the space. It set a tone for things to come, like the dinner, the party, and the awesome speeches.
Share this article with your wedding party or other guests who may be speaking. Let them know the tone and theme for your wedding so their toasts will feel like it is meant to be a part of the event. Let’s look at three ways to write a wedding toast for a wedding.
A fun wedding toast should engage the guests and use light humor to talk about who the couple is and what brought them together. These types of toasts work really well if your toaster is someone you grew up with like a sibling or lifelong friend. These people know you best and can tell the most amazing stories about the things you used to do and how your spouse totally flipped the script on who you are now.
Don’t get into anything embarrassing that you’ve sworn to never mention again. Instead, highlight your fun moments, your quick wit, and maybe some of the clumsy things you know about either spouse.
Are you likely to get emotional and choked up? If you are giving a toast and know that you are not going to need to take a break because the couple means so much to you, keep it short. Talk directly to the couple about how amazing they are and the joy they will bring to the world as a couple.
Your toast doesn’t have to be a 10 minute speech; in fact, it shouldn’t! If you are a sibling, speak to your relationship growing up and the person they have become. If you are college friends, talk about how you met and the moment the couple met each other. That’s it. Short and sweet and wish them well into the future.
The last thing the wedding couple should have to worry about is an embarrassing story resurfacing that should never see the light of day. Mary Claire’s Maid of Honor was a college friend she met at Rollins College 10 years ago. She spoke to meeting Mary Claire and the moment she met Ian. She also talked about how the closer Mary Claire became to Ian, the less they would hang out, but the happier she became for her friend. It led to this moment on this day and that’s what the last 10 years had meant to be a part of their relationship.
Ian’s brothers followed suit in their toasts. His oldest brother spoke to meeting Mary Claire first and how Ian was protective of her because he knew his brother’s antics. However, his youngest brother spoke to the protective nature he felt with Ian and how he was now treating Mary Claire with that same respect and protection. The three of them were there for whatever and now that they had a sister in the mix, the shenanigans would continue with a whole new level.
All in all, your speech should inspire the couple to remember the good days, to recall the bad times and learn from them, and to celebrate the little successes that took them from individuals to couples.
